Sports and leisure enthusiasts will have no trouble finding ways to relax during their stay in the Essex area. Parkland, trails, walkways, playgrounds, recreation centres, conservation areas, and a large selection of golf courses abound. Whether you're looking for a safe harbour on Lake Erie or a place to practise your swing, Essex has got it all!

Cedar Creek Conservation Area

The Cedar Creek basin is considered to be one of the most significant, most extensive, and most beautiful natural areas in the Essex Region. Explore the area by canoe or kayak. Excellent bird watching and abundant wildlife.

Chrysler Canada Greenway

Fifty kilometres of abandoned railway corridor have been transformed into a multi-use recreational trail that begins south of Oldcastle, and continues south through McGregor and Harrow, and proceeds through Kingsville to Ruthven at Colasanti's Tropical Gardens.

Formerly a joint operation of the Townships of Anderdon and Colchester North, this park contains baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a pavilion, washrooms and a concession stand. Rentals available.

The Essex Retirees are committed to promotion the well-being of older adults in our community through physical, mental and social activities. Their program schedule is chock full of activities, including public Bingos on the first and third Friday nights of each month (except Good Friday) and a Diner’s Club every Wednesday and Friday at noon. Open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with special events and activities scheduled on evenings and weekends.

Just 10 minutes south of the 401 in Essex County you will discover a fantastic 18-hole golf course designed to stimulate and challenge golfers of all skill levels. The modern clubhouse, which overlooks a well-groomed course, offers licensed dining and a large menu selection. The peace and tranquility of nature can be found only minutes from Essex at Gesstwood Camp & Retreat Centre. Twenty acres of playing ground, 35 acres of woodland, and 7 acres of meandering stream provide an ideal location for this children’s summer camp that also offers spiritual and community retreats. A-frame cabins, main lodge, outdoor swimming pool, picnic shelters and many other amenities are available. For team-building challenges, ask about the high and low ropes courses! Holiday Beach Conservation Area is a perfect setting to relax and enjoy the great outdoors with friends and family. It offers over 90 serviced campsites, picnic areas, nature trails, a boardwalk, trout pond and a three-storey observation tower. Designated a globally significant Important Bird Area (IBA), it is home to the annual Festival of Hawks and draws birders from around the world.

The Parks & Recreation Department of the Town of Essex provides a variety of recreation and leisure activities that encourage residents and visitors to develop healthy and active lifestyles.

Recreation facilities include two single-pad arenas and a new twin-pad arena called Essex Centre Sports Complex; the Essex Recreation Complex, including indoor pools and waterslide; park facilities for baseball and soccer; skateboard parks in Essex and Harrow; playgrounds throughout the community; and a growing walkways, bikeways and trails system.

At its most southern point, the town has a spectacular view of Lake Erie. Boaters looking for daily, weekly, monthly or seasonal berthage receive a warm welcome at Colchester Harbour, a facility operated by the town’s Parks & Recreation Department.
