Discover Essex - Greetings from the Mayor

On behalf of the Town of Essex I would like to welcome you to Essex, Ontario – an amalgamated community that stretches from the “Hub” at Essex, through prime agricultural land, to the shores of Lake Erie at Colchester Village.

Essex is home to many of Essex County's cultural gems – the Historic Essex Railway Station, the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village, the Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum, and John R. Park Homestead – and we're within easy driving distance of many more – Kingsville Historical Park, Point Pelee National Park, and Fort Malden National Historic Site, to name just a few.

We’re also the little town with an explosive history! Take a tour of the Essex Railway Station and learn about the explosion of 1907 that killed two trainmen and made news headlines around the world. Or stop by the 114-year-old, family-owned Essex Free Press and read about the natural gas explosion that rocked the town on February 14, 1980. These two milestones in our history serve to remind us just how resilient we can be in the face of disaster. Despite serious setbacks, we are always looking for ways to build a better community!

The word “vintage” has more than one meaning in Essex! Yes, we're steeped in history, but we're also home to half of Essex County's wineries. Take a ride along the Lake Erie North Shore Wine Route and discover our world-class wines. Why not take a private tour and tasting or hop on a trolley excursion and let them be your guide. Whether it’s a day away or a weekend getaway, Essex County's wine country will not disappoint!
